At trade school for boat building in 1970, Mac Sutherland made acrylic bevel boards by hand for himself and others using a special jig. They were accurate, handy, and essential for wooden boat building, but time consuming to make. Most people made them during school out of wood or acrylic. If they were later lost, many didn't bother to make another, since it required making a special jig. Working for over twenty years in custom furniture and architectural millwork, Mac found his old bevel boards as useful as ever. |

He refined them for precision and readability using CAD and the process of photo-chemical etching for the stainless steel Bevel Boss. His new acrylic Bevel Boss is made with precision laser engraving. Sutherland Tool, Inc. was born to create and produce these tools, and bring other fine tools to craftsmen working in a wide variety of trades. Mac built his first boat, a 12' 6" catamaran, at age 14. He has worked on wooden boats from skiffs to 147' tugs in Wales and the U.S. With his wife Marilyn, he travels to wooden boat shows from Port Townsend, Washington to Rockland, Maine. They have shipped Bevel Bosses from California to the Yukon and from Labrador to Florida. Watch this
